Since so many different types of consumer product defects are covered in each monthly recall list, we divide our review into two parts. Part One of our “March 2009: Review of Consumer Product Recall List” addressed products posing potential shock, burn and fire hazards. It also covered items containing excessive lead content in surface paints and other parts. You can review Part One.

Part Two of our March 2009 Review provides information about some of the listed products that can cause choking, crash and fall hazards.

Products That May Pose Choking, Crash and Fall Hazards

  • OKK Trading of California is cooperating with the government in recalling close to 2, 900 Baby Necessities Pacifiers. Federal law bans the sale of these types of pacifiers since each nipple can become separated from the base, posing a real choking hazard to children.
  • Wiseco Performance Products of Ohio is voluntarily recalling over 400 of its Off-Road Dirt Bike Connecting Rods or Crankshaft Assemblies. It’s believed that engine stress can “cause the connecting rods to crack and the engine to lock up, posing a crash hazard.” See the following.
  • Both Health Canada and the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) are working with Infantino LLC of California to recall close to 170,000 Infant Toys in the United States and 12,000 in Canada. Should the blue metallic fabric covering each toy detach from it, children might choke on it.
  • The Electra Bicycle Company of California has agreed to recall about 3,000 of its 2009 Model Electra Bicycles with Front Trays from the marketplace. A rider can fall when the front tray becomes lose and touches the front tire.
  • Fisher-Price of East Aurora, New York has agreed to recall close to 24,000 of its 3-in-1 High Chairs. Should the booster seat release be unfastened while a child is sitting in the high chair, “the seat can fall backwards from [the] high chair frame,” causing a child to fall. Furthermore, should a user fail to properly snap the seat back in place, a child might fall and be seriously injured. See the following.
  • Both the United States and Canada have had to ask State Farm of Illinois to recall close to 800,000 of its *stuffed bears in the United States and about 27,000 in Canada since the bears’ eyes can fall off, creating a choking threat to small children. The bears are specifically referred to as “State Farm Good Neighbor Bears.”

These are just a sampling of the many product recalls listed by the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission for the month of March 2009. You can view the entire list.

Our law office hopes that these monthly reviews will help keep you and your family members safe from current products posing serious threats to your well-being.
