The July 2009 Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC’s) recall list included far fewer products containing excessive lead than prior months. Instead, it set forth a number of items posing fire, burn and flammability risks. The remaining products threaten consumers with such hazards as shock, strangulation, choking and drowning.

By providing regular product warnings, the U.S. government hopes to reach consumers before they even purchase or use these questionable items. Our firm suggests that you regularly review these lists to help keep your family and friends as safe as possible.

Part One of our July 2009 review looks at products that may cause fire, burn and flammability risks. It also notes items that pose shock and drowning hazards.

Part Two of our July 2009 review looks at products that can create choking and strangulation risks. This second article also notes the recent appointment of a new Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman (Part Two)

Products That May Pose Fire, Burn, Shock and Flammability Hazards

  • LEGO Systems Inc. of Connecticut is voluntarily recalling about 1,600 Power Function IR Remote Controls. The batteries used inside this product can overheat, creating a consumer burn hazard.
  • Thane International Inc. of California has agreed to recall close to 580,000 H2O Mop Steam Cleaners. When this product’s power cord becomes worn, it can expose the wiring, possibly creating burn or shock hazards to consumers.
  • Wilton Industries Inc. of Illinois has agreed to recall approximately, 142,000 Copco Harmony Tea Kettles. The lids of these tea kettles can come loose when being used, creating a potential burn hazard.
  • Foamorder.com of California is voluntarily recalling about 140 Natural Sense Foam Blocks with Cotton Cover Mattresses. Unfortunately, these foam blocks with cotton covers (which are to be used as mattresses) have failed to meet the federal government’s open flame standard for mattresses.
  • Walter Kidde Portable Equipment Inc. of North Carolina has agreed to recall close to 94,000 Kidde Model P12000 Dual Sensor Smoke Alarms. Electrostatic discharges can damages these units, rendering them unable to provide proper fire warnings to consumers.
  • Energizer of Missouri is voluntarily recalling close to 3,000 Energizer Light On Demand Wallplate Nightlights since they can overheat and pose a fire hazard. This danger increases when other items are plugged into the same wall outlet.
  • OJ Electronics of Illinois has agreed to recall about 30,000 208-Volt and 240-Volt Thermostats. According to the CPSC, if these thermostats’ floor sensors and cables are damaged and the power supply isn’t immediately disconnected, consumers can suffer electric shocks.
  • Product Posing a Drowning Hazard

  • Aqua-Leisure Industries of Massachusetts has agreed to recall about four million Inflatable Baby Floats. If the leg straps in these seats tear, children can fall down into the water and even drown.
