Burritos have become almost a staple in people’s diets for many reasons – they’re filling, they’re inexpensive and they can be prepared in a matter of minutes in a microwave oven. However, given the plethora of products and ingredients that can comprise any individual pre-prepared burrito, they can also be quite dangerous if any of them contain contaminants that are unknowingly ingested by consumers.
According to The Cattle Network, one California firm is recalling burrito products because of the potential for consumers to contract a condition that could be deadly in some cases:
“Windsor Foods, a Riverside, Calif., establishment, is recalling approximately 2,268 pounds of beef and bean burrito products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.
The following products are subject to recall:
18-pound bulk cases containing individually wrapped “BUTCHER BOY RED CHILE BEEF & BEAN BURRITOS.”
Each case of Butcher Boy brand burritos, subject to recall, contains a total of 72 burritos and bears the establishment number “EST. 1905″ within the USDA mark of inspection; the package code “1219215;” the case code “2080001;” and advises “KEEP FROZEN.”
Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. However, listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact a physician.”
When these products become available on the retail level, you can track them at the FSIS website here.
