As we all continue to move towards a world where technology envelops ever more of our daily lives, we encounter new products that offer the utmost in convenience and capabilities. Many people have believed in the benefits of portable electronic devices that can play DVD’s, MP3 technology and CD’s, and many of these products are powered by batteries that allow these devices to be used almost anywhere.
However, not all of these products are safe, and one company has initiated a recall of almost 20,000 batteries because of the potential for a fire. According to the UPI:
“The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of Coby Electronics rechargeable batteries due to a fire hazard.
About 19,600 batteries imported from China were recalled by Coby Electronics Corp. of Lake Success, N.Y.
The batteries can overheat, a potential fire hazard, the commission said.
The recalled batteries were sold with portable DVD/CD/MP3 players that have an 8 1/2 inch screen and product number TF-DVD-8501. They were sold nationwide from January 2007 through September 2009 for between $140 and $275.”
The article goes on to state that those who own this product should stop using it immediately. Anyone who is not sure should take a few steps to check in order to avoid this fire hazard. The company is also offering refunds for these defective batteries, as is usually the case when a product is found to be unreasonably dangerous. If you or someone you love has been injured by this product or any other, you need to assert your rights with the help of a defective products lawyer who understands how to hold these corporations accountable.
